A thorough, conscientious introduction, by the author of A Beginner's Book of Knitting and Crocheting and . . . Needlepoint and Embroidery, to selecting fibers, setting up on a dowl (or on supporting forms such as a metal ring or cardboard template), and executing various weaves, knots, and other techniques. In addition to strict off-loom weaving Parker includes chapters on fingerweaving and plaiting as practiced by North American Indians, the basketry techniques of twining and cording, netting as in traditional hammock construction, and crocheting. Her diagrams for all the different weaves, knots, and variations suffice to demonstrate how they are accomplished; however, Dona Meilach's photos of the same steps in her recently revised, adult paperback Weaving Off-Loom give a better indication of how they look; also, Meilach's more numerous, varied, and motivating photos of finished products better illustrate how the particular techniques turn out.
