The world of the Korean-American boy Minho as he accompanies his mother on her daily errands is rife with sounds (a washing machine tumble-dries the word ""thump""; the word ""clink"" is tossed in with coins in a cash register drawer; the word ""honk"" slides down the sloped roof of a Volkswagon; a static-ridden TV snoozes, ""zzzzzz""). The din of the city is presented as the familiar and welcoming sound of life, although at the end of the book Minho tries to sleep but can't, because all he can hear is the dribble of water into the bathroom sink.
