Heavily documented and with numerous contemporary quotes, a workmanlike history employing more temperate language than Bruce Catton's and painting a simple picture that may appeal to readers seeking accounts of the main battles. After a chapter on the convulsive struggles that precipitated America's Civil War, Kent focuses on military movements with only brief mention of draft riots, prisoner of war camps, hospitals, or military technology. Both sides are presented fairly, with special mention of valiant military actions. Treatment of the aftermath and results of the war is sketchy. Although photos are well chosen and captioned, the few maps provided fail to show how the armies maneuvered. Shallow but usable. Chronology, source notes, index. (Nonfiction. 12+)
