Both an orphan's identity and a town's investment in a gold mine are at stake in this Nova Scotian adventure. Eleven year old Michael has lived with Ma Lovey ever since he can remember, under the burden of the idea that his parents had not wanted him in the first place. Then to the supposedly dead gold mine near their town come two strangers, Budd and Harte, to reopen it and convince the people it is still good. Among their shenanigans, Budd and Harte play on the legend of a local ghost, until Michael and Capt. McKay of the Mounted Police block their intentions and discover evidence, in an old plane crash, of Michael's Scotch heritage. Plausibly written, this has some good characterizations of an area and its people.
