This is an interesting book for non-Catholics and Catholics alike. For the author, writing as a Catholic, gives a popular history of the papacy and a description of the powers and duties of the Pope as they have evolved over the centuries and a detailed account of the procedure that is followed upon the death of a Pope and of the almost ritualistic method of electing a new Pope and of the elaborate ceremony of coronation. In the appendix there is included a chronological list of the supreme pontiffs, brief biographies of the cardinals, and a description of the pontifical family and an outline of the events which transpire between the death of a Pope and the crowning of his successor.
