Akwaeke Emezi is turning their attention to romance.

The author’s newest book will be a romance novel titled You Made a Fool of Death With Your Beauty, publisher Atria announced in a news release.

“The inspiration behind You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty came from a love for romance novels that Akwaeke had growing up in Nigeria that never went away,” Atria said. “Akwaeke was constantly falling in love with novel after novel as they were secretly passed among friends. The result of Akwaeke’s passion for the genre is a story so compelling, polished, and vivid, you will feel as though you are right alongside Akwaeke’s characters throughout their entire journey.”

Emezi’s novel follows an artist named Feyi Adekola easing back into the dating scene five years after her partner was killed in an accident, Atria said.

Emezi made their literary debut in 2018 with the novel Freshwater. Their latest book, Dear Senthuran, was published in June; a critic for Kirkus called the memoir “undoubtedly compelling.”

Emezi has two other books coming out next year: a young-adult novel called Bitter and a poetry collection titled Content Warning: Everything.

You Made a Fool of Death With Your Beauty is slated for publication on May 24, 2022.
