Netflix dropped a trailer for its upcoming film adaptation of Emily Henry’s People We Meet on Vacation.
Henry’s comic romance novel, published in 2021 by Berkley, follows best friends Alex, a high school teacher, and Poppy, a travel writer and influencer, who reconnect on a vacation after having a falling-out. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus called the novel “a warm and winning When Harry Met Sally… update that hits all the perfect notes.”
The film adaptation is directed by Brett Haley and written by Yulin Kuang. Emily Bader (My Lady Jane) plays Poppy, with Tom Blyth (Billy the Kid) starring as Alex. Other cast members include Sarah Catherine Hook (The White Lotus), Jameela Jamil (The Good Place), and Lucien Laviscount (Emily in Paris).
In the trailer, set to Robyn’s song “Hang With Me,” Bader tells Blyth, “That’s why I want to travel. You can actually be who you want to be instead of who they say you are.”
Blyth says, “How about every summer, wherever we are, we meet somewhere in the world for a trip?” Bader replies, “Deal.”
The trailer cuts to shots of Bader and Blyth eating beignets in New Orleans, driving through a forest of pine trees, basking on a beach, and dancing in a nightclub. In one scene, Blyth tells Bader, “You live in a fantasy land, always running away to new places, new connections.” It concludes with a shot of the two staring longingly at each other in the rain.
People We Meet on Vacation is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on Jan. 9.
