Michelle Zauner’s second book is coming in 2027.
Knopf will publish the indie rocker’s Thank You for Your Suffering next spring, Elle reports. The press calls the book “a moving, funny, unforgettable new memoir about Michelle Zauner’s year in South Korea.”
Zauner, the singer and guitarist for indie-pop band Japanese Breakfast, made her literary debut in 2021 with Crying in H Mart, a memoir about her relationship with her mother, who died of cancer in 2014. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus called the book, which became a New York Times bestseller, “a tender, well-rendered, heart-wrenching account of the way food ties us to those who have passed.”
Zauner’s new memoir, Knopf says, will cover the year the author spent in South Korea, learning the language so that she could connect with relatives in the country and read the diary that her mother left behind.
“Zauner’s voice is fierce and emotional, her prose more precise and assured than ever, and her honesty is mesmerizing, as she shares her failures and her victories with unwavering candor,” Knopf says of the book.
Zauner told Elle that she wanted to explore the Korean language after focusing on the nation’s food in her last memoir. “It made me suddenly really want to go further in connecting to that part of my mom’s history and who she was as a person, and so I really regretted not learning the language, and I felt quite embarrassed about it. I was really curious: If I did spend a year there, how much could I learn?”
Thank You for Your Suffering is slated for publication on April 27, 2027.
