Carley Fortune is inviting readers to spend one more summer at the lake.
In an Instagram post, the novelist announced that the third installment of the series that began with Every Summer After and One Golden Summer will be coming in 2027. Berkley will publish Only in Summer next spring.
Every Summer After, published in 2022, introduced readers to Persephone Fraser, who used to spend her summers at a lake house in the Canadian town of Barry’s Bay; she returns to the lake after the mother of her ex-lover, Sam Florek, dies. In One Golden Summer, published last year, Sam’s brother, Charlie, falls for Alice, a photographer whom he encountered years before.
Every Summer After was adapted into a television series starring Sadie Soverall, Matt Cornett, and Michael Bradway, that premiered on Amazon Prime Video in June; the series has been renewed for a second season.
In a May interview with Kirkus, Fortune discussed the origin of the first book in the series. “It was something I just needed to do for myself,” she said. “I’d given and given to my career, and it wasn’t giving back. I needed to reclaim a piece of my creativity. I figured out how much I needed to write in a day to finish a book by the end of the year, and it was 388 words. I’d get up really early—before my kid was awake, before I had to work—and write. And that book became Every Summer After.”
Only in Summer will follow Eleanor Florek, Charlie and Sam’s cousin, who buys a cottage in Barry’s Bay and learns that the small home next door is set to be bulldozed and replaced with a “monstrous lake house.”
“Big news!!!,” Fortune wrote in her Instagram post. “I’m returning to Barry’s Bay with my sixth novel, ONLY IN SUMMER, and I hope you’ll join me!”
Only in Summer is scheduled for publication on May 18, 2027.
