Jenna Bush Hager’s latest Today show book club pick is Maurene Goo’s One & Only.
Goo’s novel, scheduled for publication Tuesday by Putnam, follows Cassia Park, a Los Angeles matchmaker who believes she is fated to fall in love with a man named Daniel Nam. She has a fling with a younger man, only to find out that his boss is named Daniel Nam, and she must choose between the two men. In a starred review of the book, a critic for Kirkus wrote, “A perfect blend of steamy angst and family drama makes for a love triangle that’s impossible to put down.”
Hager announced the book’s selection on the Today show, saying, “It is the perfect book for February, the month of love, and this book is full of it: romantic love, mother-daughter love, and even…a love triangle.…One & Only is a book about fate versus free will, it’s a book about love and commitment, and it flies. You will start reading [it] this weekend and will be done by the end.”
Goo, whose young adult novels include I Believe in a Thing Called Love and Throwback, reacted to the announcement in her Substack newsletter, writing, “A few months ago I got an ecstatic call from my editor and agent because One & Only was picked to be Read with Jenna’s February book club pick. It was one of those emotionally walloping moments that had me lying down on the rug after.…I am so happy to share this news as we lead up to release day—what a jet-fueled power of a boost. Thank you for joining me on this ride.”
