Ian McEwan’s first nonfiction book is coming in 2027.
Knopf will publish the British novelist’s Between Books next spring, it announced in a new release. The press calls the book “a dazzling collection of essays, ranging from intimate memoirs of his childhood and his early days as a writer, to illuminating explorations of consciousness, the health of the planet, and living in a world without his closest friends.”
McEwan is one of the U.K.’s most celebrated fiction writers. He made his literary debut in 1975 with the story collection First Love, Last Rites and went on to publish acclaimed novels including The Cement Garden, Black Dogs, Enduring Love, Atonement, On Chesil Beach, and What We Can Know. He has earned six Booker Prize nominations and won the award in 1998 for Amsterdam.
Between Books, Knopf says, “brings together for the first time his piercingly brilliant, wide-ranging essays, composed across his life and ranging from intimate personal recollection to bold intellectual inquiry. They illuminate the ideas, passions, experiences and questions that have shaped his life and work, and are essential reading.”
McEwan said in a statement, “I started out contemplating a ragbag of disparate pieces and ended up with what I hope is an emotional and intellectual journey.”
Between Books is scheduled for publication on May 25, 2027.
