Reese Witherspoon’s latest book club pick is the sequel to a novel she knows quite well.
The actor selected Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Truths as her September book club pick. The novel is a follow-up to Moriarty’s Big Little Lies, which was adapted into an HBO series in which Witherspoon starred.
Big Little Truths, published Tuesday by Crown, revisits the characters from Big Little Lies—a group of women friends living in a fictional Australian town near Sydney—10 years later. Their children are now in high school, and a stranger has been lurking around the school, asking questions that could reveal secrets the women have been trying to keep. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus wrote of the novel, “Don’t wait for the TV series—Moriarty’s sparkling writing is worth the read.”
The series adaptation of Big Little Lies, also starring Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, and Zoë Kravitz, aired on HBO from 2017 to 2019. A third season of the series is in the works; it will be based on Big Little Truths.
Witherspoon announced the selection of the novel on Instagram, in a video that begins with a scene from the Big Little Lies series, in which Witherspoon, as Madeline Mackenzie, screams “I want more!”
The video then cuts to Witherspoon holding Big Little Truths, saying, “I got more!...I can’t tell you how fun it is to go back down memory lane with these characters. Their kids are up to all kinds of crazy shenanigans, and these moms are just trying to survive.”
Moriarty also shared news of her novel’s selection on Instagram, writing, “Thank you so very much to Madeline Martha Mackenzie, I mean Reese Witherspoon, for choosing Big Little Truths for her incredible book club! I’m so grateful. Big Little Truths is out now.”
Moriarty discusses Big Little Truths on the latest episode of Kirkus’ Fully Booked podcast, which dropped today.
