Rob Reiner, the actor and filmmaker who directed some of cinema’s most iconic literary adaptations and recently published a book about the making of This Is Spinal Tap, was found dead in his Los Angeles home alongside his wife, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, the New York Times reports.
The Reiners were stabbed to death, police told the newspaper, and their son Nick Reiner has been arrested, although no charges against him have been announced.
Rob Reiner, the son of comic actors Carl and Estelle Reiner, first rose to fame for his role as Mike “Meathead” Stivic on the Norman Lear sitcom All in the Family. He pivoted to directing, and his first film, the mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, became a cult classic.
His third movie as a director, Stand by Me, was based on Stephen King’s novella The Body, and became one of the most enduring films of the 1980s. He also directed a film adaptation of King’s Misery, which earned star Kathy Bates an Academy Award.
Reiner also directed film adaptations of William Goldman’s The Princess Bride; Alan Zweibel’s North: The Tale of a 9-Year-Old Boy Who Becomes a Free Agent and Travels the World in Search of the Perfect Parents; and Wendelin Van Draanen’s Flipped. In September, Gallery Books published A Fine Line Between Stupid and Clever, an oral history of This Is Spinal Tap, co-written with the film’s stars, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer. “This book doth rock,” declared a Kirkus critic in a starred review.
Reiner’s admirers paid tribute to him on social media. On the platform X, Stephen King wrote, “I’m horrified and saddened by the death of Rob Reiner and Michele. Wonderful friend, political ally, and brilliant filmmaker (including 2 of mine). Rest in peace, Rob. You always stood by me.”

And former President Barack Obama posted, “Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele. Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen. But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people—and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action. Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”
