Freida McFadden’s The Surrogate Mother is headed to the big screen, Deadline reports.

McFadden’s novel, originally self-published in 2018 and reissued in August by Poisoned Pen Press, tells the story of Abby, a woman desperate to have a child and who accepts an offer from her personal assistant, Monica, to serve as a surrogate mother. Things go wrong when it turns out that Monica is not what she seems.

Anna Klassen will write the screenplay for the adaptation. She is also the screenwriter of three upcoming literary adaptations: Anna Todd’s The Last Sunrise, Anna Shilling’s All in Monte Carlo, and Rebecca Yarros’ The Last Letter.

McFadden’s bestselling 2022 novel, The Housemaid, was adapted into a film released earlier this month, directed by Paul Feig and starring Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, and Brandon Sklenar. Her novels The Tenant and The Teacher are both being adapted as movies, while her forthcoming book Dear Debbie is being developed as a television series.

Klassen shared news of the Surrogate Mother adaptation on Instagram, writing, “An unbelievable end to the year!!! As a massive fan of @fmcfaddenauthor, I’m beyond excited to adapt THE SURROGATE MOTHER for @sonypictures. Twisty, unsettling, and utterly absorbing, it’s exactly the kind of story I go to the theater to see.”
