KIRKUS REVIEW

Golf is one of the fastest growing participant sports in the country, and 21-year-old Tiger Woods is certainly one of the rising stars among the pros. Boyd (First Lady, 1994), though, communicates none of the excitement Woods has brought to this ancient sport. Neither does he provide a glimpse of the young man behind often awesome achievements. Readers get little more than a laundry list of games and tournaments Woods has played since he first swung a golf club--with perfect form, his father says--at the tender age of ten months. There is almost no discussion of his parents' roles in his life, nor is there much mention of the racial slights Woods endured in the white-dominated world of amateur and professional golf. Aficionados of the sport may enjoy all the talk of birdies, eagles, putts, and par: ``[Tom] Lehman teed off first and hooked the ball into the water bounding one side of the hole. Tiger used a three iron to lay the ball six inches from the cup for an easy tap in.'' Non-golfers, however, will find a lot of jargon to cut through for information that hardly expands on newspaper and magazine accounts that are also more compelling.
