Bit by geometric bit, two dogs are built out of an assortment of triangles and quadrangles in a cleverly tactile piece of whimsy. An introductory all-white spread reveals a giant question mark on the verso, and eight die-cut triangles on the recto, the holes they make revealing a red-and-black background. With a turn of the page, the verso reveals the word “legs” and the recto, four pairs of triangles—the white die-cut pieces glued to the page—perched at the horizon line between red and black. Each subsequent turn follows this pattern, the sun rising in the sky as bodies, tails, heads, ears, mouths (“woof!” “woof!”) and finally, “puppies!” accumulate on the page. The graphical simplicity combines with the touch-and-feel feature to create a perfectly delightful interactive mystery that will appeal to any small child who loves Lois Ehlert’s Color Zoo or Color Farm, or Ed Emberley’s Go Away, Big Green Monster!
