KIRKUS REVIEW

Always expressive Tharlet brings life to this spare tale that combines trust, promises and hibernation. Brief text relates the experiences of young marmot Bruno, who awakens from his winter nap and become best friends with Dandelion. When her petals are gone, Dandelion promises Bruno all will be well once he blows her seeds away. Bruno mourns the apparent loss of his friend. Upon awakening from his latest hibernation, he finds a wonderful surprise. Gauzy watercolor paintings featuring Tharlet’s customary soft, natural color palette expressively convey the glory of the seasons through use of brilliant yellows, greens and muted earth tones. Bruno’s sense of loss is palpable, as is his playful curiosity about the world. This sweet, deceptively simple story effectively portrays the cycle of life to young children, likely imparting a sense of hope and wonder. Sharp-eyed children will spot the different colors used in the title spelling out the reassuring message, “I promise.” (Picture book. 3-7)
