A curly-haired, brown dog named Truffle takes a winter walk in this little book about the five senses intended for very young children. When Truffle goes into the snowy garden, strips of sentence ask: “What does Truffle hear?” Or “What does Truffle see? Smell? Taste? Feel?” For each question, the reader can “Lift a Flap” and get an answer, for example: “Truffle heard a woodpecker.” “What does Truffle see?” Lift a flap and the sentence strip reads, “Truffle saw his paw prints.” Each of the five senses is color-coded and questions appear in the same order. Most answers have an image as a clue, so young non-readers will enjoy predicting the reply, but sometimes, the young child for whom this is intended may be stumped. For example, when the question asks: “What does Truffle smell?,” the answer is: “Truffle smelled a blizzard coming.” The sturdy cardboard pages and glossy cover should stand up to moderately heavy handling.
