KIRKUS REVIEW

Part two of Feist's latest epic (following Shadow of a Dark Queen, 1994) set in Midkemia, the scene of his previous Riftwar saga, with certain characters making a reappearance. This time, against the backdrop of an impending invasion by Demon Lords, Erik von Darkmoor continues his adventures while his friend Roo develops a new career as a merchant prince. Meantime, the snake-humanoid Saaur have prepared an evil green stone, charged with the power of thousands of sacrificed souls, that is the key to opening the doorway to the world of the Demon Lords. Midkemia addicts will be accustomed to Feist's plodding, self- absorbed style and lack of true initiative, and should be content; newcomers needn't bother.
