WHEN THE GOING WAS GOOD

This reprints, in one volume, selected, connected passages from four of Waugh's travel books which were published between 1929 and 1935. And they still provide a very easy entertainment, a miscellany of personal observation, incidental intelligence of people and places from the time when in Bachelor Abroad he looked only for pleasure, to his return to Abyssinia as a war correspondent in 1935. Paris, Naples, Cairo, Algiers,- the first trip to Abyssinia for the coronation ceremony and the "crazy enchantment" of that country; Adon, ; the continued fascination for "distant and barbarous places" which took him to Brazil- and into the bush. There's the awareness here, the talent for the clever- the facile- one associates with Waugh and which gives this continuity a special charm. This edition will make this material available to the larger market opened up by Brideshead Revisited.
