England during Cromwell's revolution, and especially that part of Devon which saw the heat of it, backgrounds an adventure of loyalties and plots, highlights a character and vividly paints the issues with which he has to deal. A puritan farmer's son, Simon grew up in friendship with Amias Hanneford, a doctor's son and a royalist. Parted when war comes, Simon and Amias go to their own armies and it is Simon's course we follow- through battle, being wounded, in his feelings for the men around him and theirs towards their cause. Finally a reunion with Amias tests his friendship and the boy's ability to forgive. The famous Torrington church explosion is a focal point. Historical romance on an old theme, broad enough to give it new life.
