COLLECTED POEMS, 1955

by Robert Graves

Pub Date: June 30th, 1955
Publisher: Doubleday

Here is a generous volume of the collected verse of the poet and novelist perhaps best known for his novel- I Claudius. Skillfully written, studded with fine words, the poems however add up to little. Many connote the author's bitterness, bitterness against himself, against his native country, against the world. Some reflect a dry romanticism tinged with Welsh melodic strains. But on the whole there is little organic growth or structure. This is a pity, for many a poet less gifted in technique is capable of poetry with greater emotional content and significance.
