KIRKUS REVIEW

This innovative combination of photo shoot and short-story collection looks at the “it girl” from the inside. These girls may appear to have it all, but their inner monologues and myspace-like confessions reveal that they are lonely, insecure and lost. Many of them are also unlikable and shallow despite their angst, but some pieces stand out, particularly “Beautiful Scars” (coming to terms with the physical results of a car accident) and the very brief “Dear Dad” (about the neglected child of a rock star) and “How it is Now” (from a teen mother to her child). Some stories are overtly linked with cross references to characters or situations; others appear to have no relation to each other or the overall scope. The visually appealing photo-essay style contributes little depth or content, and some references (excitement over a dress worn by Paris Hilton) feel dated. However, the fresh look combined with the topical material make this likely to be popular, particularly with reluctant readers. Daring but uneven. (Short stories. 12+)
