DRAMA HIGH (reviewed on December 15, 2009)

In Drama High’s ninth volume and first super-edition, self-possessed AP student, hairstylist and voodoo practitioner–in-training Jayd Jackson comes under mystical attack. Family nemesis Esmeralda, working through Jayd’s smug archenemy Misty, sends Jayd sleepwalking through dreams that leave her weak. Meanwhile, Valentine’s Day approaches, and three boys compete for Jayd’s affection: Rah, the player who takes her for granted, Jeremy, the clueless white ex-boyfriend, and Emilio, a charming newcomer. Divine juggles the numerous subplots and characters skillfully—a list of “The Crew” at the beginning helps—and Jayd has warm, genuine, realistically flawed relationships with family, friends and would-be lovers. Esmeralda’s plot to rob Jayd of her powers may seem outlandish, but it never disrupts and often adds to the abundant, juicy drama. (Fiction. YA)
