Mark Sanderlin narrates this comic middle-grade audiobook with the perfect amount of flair. Brewster Gaines loves making videos but has yet to achieve his ultimate goal: going viral online. When he enlists a cool new classmate as his scene partner, Brewster doesn't realize the chaos he's about to unleash. As more kids join the project, Sanderlin deftly voices Brewster's alarm and bewilderment at the extent to which he's losing control. Sanderlin delicately balances this reaction with Brewster's growing appreciation for how his new friends fill the lonely spaces left by his emotionally distant family. Sanderlin creates subtle differences in the accents of the large cast of characters, with occasional outbursts of deliberate silliness from characters like cosplayer Godfrey Tarkington.

Ken Coleman's expertise as a baseball announcer enriches this history of the Boston Red Sox since the sale of Babe Ruth to the N.Y. Yankees. He leads off with a grim account of this transaction, which started the curse that has plagued the Red Sox ever since. The sermon-like tone will amuse non-believers and comfort listeners who are certain the team is cursed. Like the ups and downs of Boston's play through the years, the narrator's voice fluctuates--exuberant and then despondent--in tone and tempo accurately reflecting the mood of any given baseball season. The narrator is very successful at conveying the emotional roller coaster ride Red Sox fans have endured as a result of the curse of the Bambino.

In the sounds of a preacher's guitar and a blues-loving aunt's Victrola, little Riley B.
