THE THIEVES OF MANHATTAN

This smart novel lampoons the world of book publishing with a parody of action-adventure books. Author Langer gives listeners a strange world in which literary references substitute for nouns, like calling a hat a “Capote” or renaming cigarettes “Vonneguts." Despite having to cope with this silly convention, narrator Rich Orlow is captivating. The work shines a light on the laziness and corruption of publishers, in particular satirizing novels rife with historical puzzles and clues found in ancient tomes. Inspired by stories of plagiarism, hoaxes (such as James Frey's A MILLION LITTLE PIECES), and real life, Langer's hero, Ian Minot, agrees to commit a monstrous literary fraud and humble the publishing gods. But, as in any good novel, nothing is what it seems. Everyone lies, and Minot is forced to rewrite his own story to survive the machinations.

      18mm BLUES

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
