Narrator Nancy Wu brings listeners into the mind of teenage love-and- relationship columnist Lu Charles. Wu's smooth voice has just the right inflections for Lu's dry sense of humor as she muses about love and heartbreak. However, through both the narration and the story itself Lu ends up sounding older than her 18 years. Wu's strength in this work is her delivery of dialogue. When Lu interacts with the other characters, the back-and-forth of Wu's voices is engaging. She especially makes listeners want to hear more of Lu as a columnist who asks just the right questions to get her interviewees to reveal their personal stories.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.
