The authenticity of Luis Moreno's narration makes this audiobook especially good listening. After his brother, Felix, is tragically killed, Carlos Portillo is persuaded by Felix's ghost to flee Mexico for the San Juan Islands and, fueled by their shared love of food, get a job in a renowned restaurant. The chats between Carlos and Felix's ghost are hysterical as Felix admonishes his cautious brother to relax and rains jokes and advice down on him with increasing frequency. As the kitchen scenes crackle with the intensity and frenetic flow of a popular restaurant, the members of the multicultural staff are portrayed beautifully by Moreno. Each chapter begins with a mouthwatering recipe, and Carlos's descriptions of preparing food sparkle with passion, keeping listeners hungry for more.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.
