by Adrianna Cuevas ; Read by Anthony Rey Perez ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 22, 2023
Narrator Anthony Perez does a fine job narrating this juvenile mystery with a lot of heart. Cuban American Rafa Alvarez thought it was funny when he and his friends stole the slushy machine at school. As punishment, Rafa's dad sent him to New Mexico to work at Ranch Espanto (Ghost Ranch) with his father's old friend for a month. In Rafa's defense, home has been tense--his mother has aggressive cancer. Rafa starts to make friends, but then a mysterious man begins to sabotage him. Perez switches seamlessly between English and Spanish. He successfully depicts heavy emotional moments involving grief and fear. Perez shines when he voices Rafa's mother; he narrates her parts with a warmth listeners will surely love.

by Erin Soderberg Downing ; Read by Kate Coventry , Pete Cross & Cassandra Morris ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 22, 2025
Cousins Avery and Jax don't have much in common, including their feelings about a summer at their family's crumbling island vacation home. She thinks it's a great adventure, and he'd rather be anywhere else. Narrator Kate Coventry embodies Avery's open, exuberant, and sometimes thoughtless behavior, while Pete Cross makes clear to listeners how much quiet Jax is impacted by his father's overbearing nature. As they help clean the place up to sell it, they find pages torn from a diary that may uncover what drove their parents away from the island and each other years before. Cassandra Morris's brief narration of the mysterious diarist is compelling in its simplicity. Narrators Kate Coventry and Pete Cross provide vivacity to this exploration of family history and regrets.
