This novel, set in small-town British Columbia, defies categorization; it's a mystery, with a bit of magical realism and folklore. Narrator Dan John Miller portrays the story's protagonist, Leo Kreutzer, with compassion, using a soft Canadian accent. Leo's friend, Kevin Seven, who is new in town, mesmerizes everyone, especially Hanna Swann, another newcomer to town. But soon, evil is set in motion. Miller portrays the well-developed characters sympathetically and makes the imagery that describes the unseen world believable. A slight weakness is that Miller's female voices sound strained. Aside from that, his performance suits the novel, and listeners will find Leo and his friends engaging.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
