Alexandra Duncan has created a dark future that is at once utterly remote and disturbingly familiar. Johanna Parker’s perceptive, energetic narration makes the fantastic seem real and emotionally relevant for listeners of all ages. Parastrata Ava has assumed a position of immense responsibility and danger within her father’s space community, but when she realizes just how big the universe is, and the number of choices that have been denied her, she finds the courage to defy everyone and carve a life of her own. Parker makes the fear and wonder in Parastrata’s journey tangible and creates a supporting cast of readily identifiable, sympathetic characters. Parker is a calm and steady guide for listeners through this haunting, ominous, and ultimately captivating world.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.
