by Alexis Ohanian ; Read by Alexis Ohanian ‧ RELEASE DATE: Oct. 1, 2013
Author Ohanian made his mark with Reddit.com, and this audiobook is his founder's story (a memoir lite), mixed with some entrepreneurial inspiration and topped off with a dash of polemic (let's keep the Internet free, like forever). Ohanian is a veteran TED lecturer and video game enthusiast, and he invests his audiobook with an energetic, self-confident, and slightly self-absorbed performance. A downloadable PDF augments the audiobook, and the frequent references to it may become annoying for listeners on the go. Despite the title, this genre-crossing audiobook doesn't offer any insights into the future, and the theme--a free Internet will promote entrepreneurial development--seems self-evident (and self-serving). The audiobook illuminates the misdeeds of malevolent marketers, sleazy lawyers, and unethical doctors.
Cassandra Campbell’s narration is a model of a nonfiction performance. Her reading of exposition is careful and convincing. She knows where to pause and how to move the action forward. Law professor Burch’s investigative report of the con men, grifters, and profiteers who took advantage of women who were harmed by vaginal mesh implant removal is deeply researched. The revelations of how these “professionals” colluded to scam these vulnerable women who experienced incontinence, pain, and emotional distress after their procedures is horrific. The patients whose mesh implants were removed often had no medical workups prior to surgeries and were charged egregious hidden fees. The text also exposes the legal system’s glacial pace.
