The title of this novel hints at the ironic humor that characterizes its unconventional coming-of-age story. At the age of 14, Emily realizes that the dysfunctional people in her family and upscale suburban community are not credible adults. It’s clear that she will have to grow into maturity on her own. Narrator Tavia Gilbert deftly captures Emily's vulnerability, confusion, and wry analysis as she encounters people and experiences that make her journey unique. Gilbert's unaffected presentation avoids sensationalizing Emily's rough language or the occasional description of a sexual encounter. Subtle shifts of tone are all Gilbert needs to give Emily a convincing voice through her ten-year journey of transformation from troubled adolescent to her own version of successful adult.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
