Goodman's elegiac debut novel is more portrait than narrative. It is the poetic language and richness of observation that make KAATERSKILL FALLS so memorable a work. Those are also the qualities that demand a reading that is textured and wise. Toren proves up to the challenge. The novel concerns an Orthodox Jewish community that summers in the Catskills. The book portrays the rhythms and tensions of everyday life, both within this insulated community and in its relationship to the outside world. Toren expertly manages several exotic accents, but more valuable than that, she reads with an intelligence commensurate with the writing.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
