Gordon Griffin is well selected to portray the many voices and emotions of this Booker Prize nominee. It is the intertwining story of a separated and unhappy family brought together to witness the anguished dying of the mother by cancer and a Hungarian émigré playwright in Paris trying to make peace with his disappointing past. Employing an intricate metaphor, Miller reveals their basic human need to breathe the pure oxygen of honesty and hope for better futures. Gordon Griffin narrates Miller's beautiful writing with full understanding and sensitivity. His British accent supports the English characters well, his Hungarian and French accents are convincing, and his American is spot-on. In addition, his female voices are equal in skill to those of the legendary Frank Muller. Griffin is not simply a reader but an artist of the spoken word.

      18mm BLUES

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
