by Anita Elberse ; Read by Renee Raudman ‧ RELEASE DATE: Oct. 15, 2013
Narrator Renee Raudman's no-nonsense, nonjudgmental style is well suited for this audiobook--an academic and well-researched study of the blockbuster mentality in the entertainment business. Raudman guides the listener through a series of such business successes as Lady Gaga, Maroon Five, Marvel Comics, the Real Madrid Football Club, Jay-Z, and Major League Baseball, and it's like taking a walking tour of pop culture. As for the author's thesis, some listeners will find the "bet-it-all" marketing mentality to be a depressing reminder that subtle and nuanced creations may soon become a thing of the past. Indeed, the only value ascribed to smaller projects seems to be as a training ground for the potential blockbuster.

The audiobook illuminates the misdeeds of malevolent marketers, sleazy lawyers, and unethical doctors.
Cassandra Campbell’s narration is a model of a nonfiction performance. Her reading of exposition is careful and convincing. She knows where to pause and how to move the action forward. Law professor Burch’s investigative report of the con men, grifters, and profiteers who took advantage of women who were harmed by vaginal mesh implant removal is deeply researched. The revelations of how these “professionals” colluded to scam these vulnerable women who experienced incontinence, pain, and emotional distress after their procedures is horrific. The patients whose mesh implants were removed often had no medical workups prior to surgeries and were charged egregious hidden fees. The text also exposes the legal system’s glacial pace.
