Ann Brashares's fourth and final story will certainly satisfy young adults who have followed the lives of four best friends who share a pair of jeans that seem to change their lives. In her usual style Brashares moves between their stories, and Angela Goethals's enthusiastic reading tracks the lively dialogue and fast-moving developments of the four girls' last summer together after their first year in college. Bridget goes on a dig in Turkey with an attractive, married archaeology professor, Tibby struggles with a pregnancy scare, Carmen has a surprising acting success, and Lena falls for a fellow artist. The young women's developing maturity is well characterized by both author and narrator.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.
