BENEATH THESE STONES

BENEATH THESE STONES is another in Granger's British detective series featuring Superintendent Markby and his lady friend, Meredith Mitchell. In this tale the corpse of a local farmer's wife is discovered along a thickly wooded railroad embankment. The farmer is the prime suspect, and his 12-year-old daughter clearly knows something she is unwilling to disclose. Narrator Bill Wallis does his usual masterful job of narration. Each of the many characters speaks in a distinctive voice. As the cast includes members of many classes, including a family of gypsies camping on the farmer's land, this is no mean feat. Wallis handles female voices with particular skill; he identifies women as women without resorting to falsetto or shrillness. Fans of mysteries and fans of Bill Wallis have a real treat in store.

      18mm BLUES

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
