Gildart Jackson narrates much of this audiobook with the ponderous profundity of a minor god who deigns to enlighten a disbelieving audience. This is especially true of his portrayal of the protagonist, "the Fat Man." As for the other and varied characters, Jackson enlivens the proceedings with distinctive portrayals. The setting is a Greek island upon which sits the Temple of Apollo; Jackson manages to make this exotic setting a character in itself. As for the plot, someone has run the Fat Man's elderly beekeeping friend off the road. There will be vengeance. Zouroudi is a British author who married into a Greek family, so the authenticity of the setting is impeccable.

Novelist Benet Archdale and housemaid Carol Stratford are two young, single parents who have no reason to know each other. They become tangled in a nightmarish spiral of kidnap, fraud, family violence and death. Ruth Rendell creates psychological suspense in thrillers that are compulsively readable or, in this case, listenable. British actress Imelda Staunton's reading is perfectly paced, and the characters are well defined. You'll have a hard time turning it off.

Barbara Rosenblat's reading fully measures up to the tale. She is a master of timing and nuance. Rosenblat's power for character interpretation has grown with each book in this amusing series. This is the best one yet.
