A complex plot of revenge and twenty-year-old missile secrets entangles a former security officer and a discredited scientist. David McCallum's voice perfectly reflects the tension and pace of the story. Accomplished accents, a soft Scot's burr, clipped British speech, an American twang, are sparsely and subtly applied to differentiate characters. Both protagonists, Tannis and Harper, speak in the first person which confuses the listener, but the fragmented story line is linked by a deliberateness in McCallum's narration. This book is a challenging candidate for abridgment; the listener is caught up by the allure of the reader, then left confused by gaps and dangling subplots.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
