Ariel Gore's novel ranges back and forth through time in a storyteller's web that is easy to follow and studded with reanimated scenes from her childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. However, all of what makes an engaging and insightful quilt of memories becomes nearly lost through Gore's narration. She whines, rushes, and sometimes reads with that abrasive near-chanting quality of young girls calling each other out. Gore is a contemporary cultural icon known for her fiction and nonfiction, and this novel offers evocative glimpses of how she became who she is. However, this audio format is not the way to meet that book.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
