SOON I WILL BE INVINCIBLE

Grossman has written a mainstream novel on a comic-book premise. Though not as well done as WILD CARDS, the twelve-book series that ran from 1987 through 2006, Grossman's INVINCIBLE does a credible job. The story features mega-villain Dr. Impossible, who is out to conquer the world for the hundredth time. Dual readers Paul Boehmer and Coleen Marlo provide alternating chapters from the point of view of the villain and the hero. Boehmer comes close to going over the top with Impossible's rants but generally does a decent job. Marlo is more controlled in her performance as heroine Fatale. There are points of humor sprinkled throughout, which sometimes minimize the tension of the story.

      TWELVE MONTHS

      DRESDEN FILES, BOOK 18

James Marsters' weary delivery perfectly captures Harry Dresden's fractured psyche as he navigates a year of mandatory mourning and political maneuvering in Chicago. Marsters doesn't just read; he inhabits Harry's exhaustion, using deliberate pacing and a somber tonal palette that underscores the protagonist's post-traumatic stress. Marsters' gift for distinct vocal characterizations remains sharp, effortlessly pivoting from the ethereal, detached elegance of the Sidhe to the grounded warmth of Harry's remaining allies. By leaning into the book's quieter, more introspective moments, Marsters elevates this urban fantasy's emotional stakes, transforming a year of Dresden's life into a poignant study of grief. It's an immersive performance that makes the wizard's vulnerability feel hauntingly real. Marsters' soulful performance makes this a compelling entry in the Harry Dresden series.
