Failing to make the determining shot in a championship, PGA golfer Bobby Jobe takes his fury out on his caddy, Henry Mote, who, having had enough of this behavior, walks off the course. But when a lightning strike incinerates Bobby’s eyes, Henry helps a physical therapist restore the pro’s game and perspective. Bob Cullen cultivates a deliberate Georgia drawl in creating the first-person narration of Henry Mote. At first, the careful enunciation of each syllable sounds more contrived than natural, but the listener soon grows accustomed to the rhythm, relaxing into the flow of the story.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
