by Brooke Kroeger ; Read by Maggi-Meg Reed ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 22, 2023
Maggi-Meg Reed performs this detailed history of women in American journalism with intelligent restraint. She narrates in a forthright style that fits stories that are fraught with challenges. The audiobook illuminates a profession with a pantheon of great female nonfiction writers and reporters. Their paths were typically one step forward, one step back. Poised for the same position, women were hired for "experience" and men for "potential." Sexism prevailed in the upper echelons of management jobs. Despite the insightful and meaningful work of Ida Tarbell and Ida Wells, the flash and swagger of the stunt journalist Nellie Bly, the detailed war stories from Martha Gellhorn, and the epoch-making achievements of Rachel Carson, Joan Didion, and Gloria Steinem--women journalists over the years have struggled to compete.

by William Manchester ; Read by Tom Parker ‧ RELEASE DATE: N/A
Manchester’s incisive writing and Parker’s friendly narration make this a compelling package on the life of 20th century icon General Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964). No student of modern times can ignore this vain, mercurial soldier whose battlefield brilliance conserved the lives of his soldiers even as they cut their opponents to ribbons. Listening to Parker, one imagines a jovial uncle delivering a slap on the back and sitting down to describe war experiences in a rich voice filled with humor and pathos. He pronounces Japanese names, New Guinea cities and American slang with effortless ease. The “you-are-there” quality grabs and holds. This is a carefully done, seamless audio presentation.

by Nicola Clark ; Read by Nicola Clark & Karen Cass ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 22, 2025
Most histories of the Tudor era focus on royals and their male underlings, but this absorbing audiobook takes a fresh look at the women who served Henry VIII's queens. Ladies-in-waiting fade into the background of most accounts, but in this introduction author Nicola Clark takes a firm feminist stand, reopening the narratives of their varied and complicated roles during the three decades of Henry's reign. Narrator Karen Cass's smooth, elegant delivery heightens the atmosphere of danger and intrigue. What happens to these women when their queen is divorced--or loses her head? With energy, conviction, and crisp enunciation, Cass finds new drama in stories many times told.
