THE SIGN OF DEATH

VICTORIAN BOOK CLUB, BOOK 2

Nano Nagle delivers this tangled mystery involving multiple murders and suspects. Sweet Lady Amy Lovell, who secretly writes murder mysteries as E.D. Burton, and Lord William, her fast friend and fellow amateur sleuth, take on their second investigation in Bath, England, in 1891. Mr. James Harding, Lord William's man of business, drowns under suspicious circumstances. Nagle realistically voices eligible aristocrats and their marriage-minded mamas, plucky domestics, and the odd professional. The crisply enunciated aristocratic duo poke into Harding's life and business affairs, triggering violent attacks, another murder or two, and multiple visits from broadly accented police. Nagle's performance of this delightful cozy may make listeners giggle or gasp, but it doesn't falter, no matter what Lady Amy and Lord William discover.

Emilia Fox rises to the challenge of creating a dozen or more voices to tell this intriguing murder mystery. Freya Lockwood and her aunt Carole are antique hunters working in league with the FBI, tracking down the source of three forged paintings recently shipped to the United States. A Scottish castle, concealed identities, and a couple of bodies make for a good yarn—not one to be taken too seriously, but reasonably compelling. Fox is on more stable vocal ground with Freya, Carole, and assorted Scots than she is with Phil, the FBI agent, but she keeps a firm grip on the plot and moves along at a good pace.
