THE TRIAL OF CONNOR PADGET

A LAWYER'S GAMBLE

Listeners hearing this courtroom drama will feel like members of the jury that is evaluating the arguments of Louisiana attorney Jack Carney, as brought to life by narrator Kevin Stillwell. He delivers a perfect interpretation of a Louisiana drawl and flawlessly conveys the tonal patterns of that region. All the other characters are carefully portrayed as well; old men sound elderly, women's voices approximate those of real women, children seem young and innocent. The premise of the novel--that justice must be tempered with compassion--may be morally ambiguous but is compellingly presented. Stillwell makes Jack seem astute, natural, and likable. This novel is more than conversations between good old boys.

      18mm BLUES

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
