Here's a story to rank among favorite animal stories for grown-ups of all time. With a lovely, witty, British touch, Caroline Alexander composes a cat's-eye journal of Ernest Shackleton's 1914 Antarctic expedition. Mrs. Chippy keeps an excellent log of shipboard duties, events, and feline observations. Steven Crossley is quite brilliant, making Mrs. Chippy as endearing to listeners as he, Chippy, was to the Endurance crew. Chippy's Scottish burr--for he is mate of Scots ship's carpenter Chipps--is distinct as he reviews daily routines, such as the seal watch or a casual stroll across the top of the sled dog kennels. Crossley also portrays the other crew members with warmth and distinction. He delivers every nuance of inquisitiveness, casual perusal, or disdain (usually for the dogs), which just enriches the researched detail of the voyage.

Nankani delivers an expressive performance that emphasizes Simi's conflict between her passion for Jack and the mission. Her distinct character voices keep the listener fully immersed. 18mm BLUES

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
