Kate Reinders narrates this campy story about Mana, a high school cheerleader who finds herself battling aliens in a quest to find her missing mom. The audiobook starts slowly, but Reinders's sprightly delivery keeps the story moving until Mana and Lyle, her possible love interest, start kicking some alien butt. Reinders has a youthful, upbeat delivery but can grow serious when she needs to in tense moments. She's perfect for this sci-fi series, equal parts laughs, lighthearted flirtation, and adventure. There's diversity in FLYING, too. Mana is Asian, and her best friend, Seppie, is black. Be prepared to listen to the next installment; FLYING will leave you up in the air.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.
