Payne has penned a take-no-prisoners book, and Paul Michael Garcia is the perfect reader for it. Sure, Garcia doesn't sound like a normal kid, but then the kid in question is far from normal. Garcia has a little smirk in his tone that perfectly underscores the actions of young Mr. Twisp as he manipulates his divorced parents, his friends, and his neighbors into helping him reunite with the girl of his dreams. He's a holy terror, and listeners may smile at his antics—while inwardly thanking the universal powers that their own offspring is nothing like him.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
