THE CLIFF'S EDGE

BESS CRAWFORD, BOOK 13

Rosalyn Lander impressively creates a post-WWI atmosphere as former battlefield nurse Bess Crawford finds herself in the midst of a series of country house murders in Yorkshire. Crawford is visiting Neville mansion at the behest of Lady Beatrice, and Lander is at her best portraying this bossy, opinionated aristocrat. Severely injured Gordon Neville denies murdering his friend and fellow soldier by pushing him off a cliff. Clues and suspects multiply as Lander presents evocative descriptions of the countryside, manse, and upstairs/downstairs life. Crawford ministers to Neville while shrewdly assisting creepy Inspector Wade. Heartbreaking wartime memories are atmospheric and often disturbing. Audio is preferable to benefit from the story's emphasis on police procedures and conversations.

Emerson and Peabody are at it again! Uncovering antiquities takes a back-seat as the romantic archaeologists track down the master criminal who is stealing Egypt's ancient treasures. With the help of their precocious son, Ramses, the intrepid pair unravel this mystery in crowded bazaars, desert camps and the heart of the Black Pyramid. Barbara Rosenblat's reading fully measures up to the tale. She is a master of timing and nuance. Rosenblat's power for character interpretation has grown with each book in this amusing series. This is the best one yet.

Brian Nishii's performance captures the essence of a Japanese immigrant, newly arrived in southern California in the early 1900s. Ryui establishes his new life in Pasadena only to get swept up into an art theft investigation, all while experiencing anti-Japanese attacks firsthand. Throughout, Nishii embodies fully the main character's struggle to adapt to this new world, learning about the culture and conflict embedded into life as a native Japanese in the social, cultural, and political environment at the turn of the 20th century. Nishii moves effortlessly among the various accents that make up the Los Angeles of the period.

Nishii captures the living environment of LA and the danger that lives just under the surface.
